We’ve worked with the Vargas Family for nearly 3 decades. This Direct Trade Coffee is a partnership with three generations of a coffee growing family. They have planted coffee in the same are for over 80 years. Doka Esate mill is one of the oldest in the country, the mill is water driven using a stream coming from the volcano.
We first visited Doka more than 20 years ago. We had already been roasting their Sintercafe Award winning coffee and we were delighted to meet the Vargas family and their manager, Arnoldo. They have all since visited with us in Maine.
The Vargas family is dedicated to producing the world's finest coffee, and in the process enlivening the lives of their workers and enhancing their country's awareness of the environmental impact of farming. Santa Eduviges, the Vargas Family name for their farm, is so named because of their deep devotion to the saint who provides shelter and food to families that don't have any. Doka Estate is an extension of their belief and their community is made up of families who live and work on the farm and are dedicated to perfecting coffee growing.
Terraced crops are managed with organic matter and earthworms and shaded with leguminous plants. Grown on the soils of the Paos Volcano, Doka Estate coffee is world renown for it has a bright acidity, heavy body and a smooth flavor.
